Helsinki SmartCity is propelled by opendata, great design, connectivity and exciting startups. 2015 Top European City award by FrostSullivan, carbonneutral by 2035, it is a city as a platform since transparency and openness is part of Helsinki DNA. Helsinki also won one of the first European Capital of Smart Tourism titles.
Kalasatama a district on the eastern edge of the city center is labelled a smart district, a place that aims to respond rapidly to the challenges of a growing city. The vision for this urban district is to help free residents of one more hour a day from their everyday chores through co-creation, agile piloting, local smart services, and resource efficiency. Smart Kalasatama is an experimental innovation platform to co-create smart infrastructure and services: the garbage bins empty themselves, in the smart grid energy and information travel in both directions, and a huge energy storage system is being planned with a capacity equivalent to the peak output of about 4000 solar panels.
Smart Kalasatama has 200-plus stakeholders whose aim is to encourage smart and clean services that can be scaled up elsewhere. They include more than 30 city departments, residents, citizen organizations, industry, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), startups and academia. It will be fully developed by 2030 to house 20,000 people and provide 8,000 jobs but already has 3,000 pioneering residents living in it. Our Top30:
